Sushi on the Sea

This concept is rooted in my travel memories from Vietnam. I was particularly drawn to the rivers of Hoi An, where wooden boats of unique shapes gently glided across the water. The riverside was lined with open-air cafés, floating markets, and restaurants that blended modern design with handcrafted detail.

The form of this piece mimics a Vietnamese riverboat, with smooth curves and a low profile. The chopsticks are designed to resemble the paddles used for rowing.

Inspiration Board

Process

  • The prototypes were milled using foam and plywood. The process started with milling three completely different forms. Several different iterations and sizes of the selected form were worked upon. The lip of the tray was prototyped with plywood. Finally, a few different forms of the legs were created and eventually the final prototype was created using cherry wood.
